Her father, Deepak Pandya, was a highly respected neuroanatomist originally from the Mehsana district in Gujarat, India. Her mother, Ursuline Bonnie Pandya (née Zalokar), was of Slovenian-American descent and was known for her strong advocacy for education and women’s empowerment.
Williams excelled academically and graduated from Needham High School in 1983 with honors. Her passion for science and exploration led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Physical Science. In June 1998, NASA selected Sunita Williams as an astronaut, and she commenced her rigorous training program. After the successful completion of her training, Williams collaborated with the Russian Space Agency, where she provided crucial support to the first Expedition Crew, contributing to the successful execution of their mission.
In an interview, Sunita said, “In 2003, the International Space Station (ISS) selected me for a long-duration mission. I flew up on the space shuttle Discovery and stayed at the ISS for six months. During which we did four spacewalks as part of the station construction.”
Williams became a Flight Engineer for Expedition 32 and the ISS Commander for Expedition 33. Across her two missions, she spent a total of 322 days in space. With 50 hours and 40 minutes of spacewalks, she ranks second among female astronauts for total spacewalk time.
